Supreme Court decongests jails over COVID-19 fears

In a bid to reduce overpopulated jails in the country, particularly during this pandemic outbreak, the Supreme Court allowed more than 80,000 convicts to gain liberty since March 16.

Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta announced the release of 81,888 inmates from March 21 to October 16 in a virtual press conference last Friday.

Concerning the discharges, 46,032 took place through videoconference in compliance with the enforced strict health protocols.

19,173 inmates got released through bail; 2,980 completed minimum imposable penalty recognizance, while 8,669 got discharged on probation.

Furthermore, 4,575 got discharged after their cases were dismissed; 1,556 got acquitted; 3,905 have completed the minimum penalty, and 5,175 have served the maximum penalty.

Even with the discharges, arrests for citizens who violate quarantine protocols has not halted.

As of October 21, 1,728 Filipinos got arrested for quarantine violations.
