Philippines - one of world's 'safest countries'

In the Washington-based Gallup Global Law and Order 2020 index, the Philippines placed among the top 50 safest countries in 2019, with an index score of 84.

Responses of nearly 175,000 adults in 144 countries and areas in 2019 served as the basis of Gallup's 2020 Global and Law Order Report.

The Philippines tied with Australia, New Zealand, Poland, and Serbia. Their index score of 84 was 12th in the overall index score ranking and made it to 37th-41st places on the list.

Singapore and Turkmenistan ranked the highest with 97 percent, followed by China-93 percent, and Iceland and Kuwait-93 percent, while Afghanistan, with 43 percent, ranked last.

The questions asked include: “In the city or area where you live, do you have confidence in the local police force?; Do you feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area where you live?; Within the last 12 months, have you had money or property stolen from you or another household member?; and, Within the past 12 months, have you been assaulted or mugged?”

Overall, the study said that nearly seven out of ten people worldwide said they felt secured and had confidence in the local police.

Duterte's leadership started strong with his goal to eliminate criminality and drugs. However, it was marked with accusations of human rights violations due to the said extrajudicial killings resulting from the war on drugs implementation.

Local human rights groups find the results not surprising, given the prevalence of law enforcers in communities since the war on drugs started.
