More street dwellers sent home on second clearing operation

Another 170 street dwellers were rescued by local police and personnel of the Cebu City government during its second clearing operation at 3 a.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

Members of the Cebu City Police Office, Cebu City Anti-Mendicancy Office, and the Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification, and Enhancement (Probe) pioneered this large scale rescue operation that first began on Friday, October 16, 2020.

A lot of those who got rescued last Friday were still caught during the second operation.

"There are others who have been rescued but after a while just returned, but we will not stop, we will be relentless especially in the assessment. Most if not all of them are Cebu City residents. They have homes, and they just like to go around and beg," Labella said.

The city has now rescued more than 300 street dwellers who are to attend a livelihood training program from the Department of Manpower Development and Placement (DMDP) and encourage them to no longer live in the streets.

More street dwellers are expected to be rescued as the government continues these operations, especially with their risk of spreading the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
