Magnitude 5 earthquake rocks Batangas, nearby areas

A magnitude 5 earthquake struck Mabini, Batangas, and rattled other areas such as Muntinlupa and Quezon City on Thursday at 1:25 p.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.


The quake was tectonic in origin, with a focal depth of 2 kilometers.


An aftershock of magnitude 2.3 already occurred around 1:27 p.m. in Mabini.


"Inaasahan po ang mga maliliit na aftershocks after ng lindol na ito...Pinapayuhan lang po natin ang ating mga kababayan na maging alerto sa mga sitwasyon na ito," Karen Garcia from Phivolcs said.


Based on Phivolcs latest records, Intensity 4 was felt in Calatagan, Batangas; Tagaytay City; Intensity 2 in Muntinlupa City, and Intensity 1 in Quezon City; Carmona and Bacoor City, Cavite; and Mauban, Quezon.


Phivolcs said there were no reports of casualty or injury during the tremor and aftershock.
