DENR-EMB initiates new normal triple environmental celebration this November

Under the theme, "New Normal Challenge: Sustainable Actions for Sustainable Future," The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) central office will conduct a triple environmental celebration this November.

The triple celebration includes Environmental Awareness Month, National Clean Air Month, and Climate Change Consciousness Week.

According to the DENR-EMB, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected and altered one's everyday sustainability practices like increased usage of single-use plastic and the alarming waste rate of personal protective equipment such as masks, gloves, and face shields.

Still, it doesn't mean to step back in ensuring that the future generation will have a healthy environment to inherit. After all, these are challenges that contribute to the community's vulnerability to the effects of climate change.

This month, the DENR-EMB would like to spotlight the sustainable activities which can urge one to continue eco-friendly and sustainable practices without jeopardizing one's health and safety.

They have incorporated some examples of sustainable activities that each one can participate in while in their own homes or communities;

1. Incorporate a plant-based meal once a week. Switching to a plant-based diet a few times a week decreases one's carbon footprint and helps the planet.

2. Start planting an urban garden. Having green spaces help alleviate the effects of air pollution, as it also aids in purifying the air you breathe.

3. Support initiatives of bike lanes installation in the community. According to the Department of Transportation, bike lanes in the city bid will lower carbon emissions.

4. Say no to plastic when buying essentials. The consumption of plastic emerged during the pandemic due to the ease of discarding them after one use.

To lessen plastic consumption, bring individual eco-bags to the grocery/market and make sure to sanitize them after using when ordering through food delivery apps.

5. Make use of spare time at home to clean and organize stuff. Try recycling and upcycling activities with family or kids. Donate old clothes or sell second-hand accessories online.

6. Use your voice. Advocate for the environment by joining the EMB Central Office's monthly environmental campaigns.

Spread awareness, join EMB contests, and organize self environmental campaigns in one's community.

Be part of the solution.
